Introduction
Growing up, I watched my Nana transform a dull, spotted stainless steel sink into a mirror-like shine in just minutes—without harsh chemicals or hours of scrubbing. Her method was simple, budget-friendly, and incredibly effective. Over the years, I’ve tried countless store-bought cleaners, but nothing beats this old-fashioned trick passed down through our family. Today, I’m sharing her effortless approach so your sink can sparkle too—fast, safe, and with ingredients you already have at home.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons baking soda
1 tablespoon dish soap (any gentle kind works)
½ lemon (or 2 tablespoons white vinegar as an alternative)
A soft sponge or microfiber cloth
Warm water
A few drops of olive oil optional, for a polished finish
Instructions
Rinse the Sink
Splash warm water around the basin to remove loose crumbs and debris. This helps the mixture glide smoothly.
Create the Cleaning Paste
In a small bowl, combine the baking soda and dish soap. Stir until it forms a thick, creamy paste.
Apply and Scrub
Dip your sponge into the paste and scrub the sink in circular motions. Pay extra attention to the drain area and around the faucet where grime hides.
Lemon Boost
Take the lemon half and rub it directly over the surfaces you just cleaned. The natural acid dissolves water spots and leaves a fresh scent.
Rinse Completely
Use warm water to rinse away all residue. You’ll already notice a dramatic shine.
Optional Polish
Add two or three drops of olive oil to a cloth and buff the sink in long strokes. This gives a protective, glossy finish that repels fingerprints.
Serving and Storage Tips
(Since this is a cleaning recipe, “serving” refers to usage.)
Use immediately after preparing the paste for best results. The baking soda can lose its fizz if stored too long.
For ongoing shine, repeat this method once or twice a week.
Store leftover lemon in the fridge for up to 3 days for your next quick clean.
