There was silence for a split second. Then Maria’s expression hardened. She picked up a sharp stone from the garden. Richard’s voice cracked with fear: “Wait, you’re damaging the car!”
Maria didn’t hesitate. With a scream, she slammed the stone into the window. A crack. Blood poured over her hand. She slammed it again. A crack. On the third blow, the window shattered. She reached through the door, opened it, and hugged Emily, sobbing with relief as the baby nestled against her chest.
Richard stepped back, shocked by what could have happened. In that moment, he knew: this wasn’t an accident.
Richard embraced his trembling daughter and kissed her forehead. “Who did this to you, Emily? Tell Dad the truth.”
Emily’s lips quivered. She pointed a trembling finger at the house. “It was her. Vanessa. She laughed when I cried. She said I wasn’t her child.”
Richard turned to Maria and Emily. His daughter lay nestled in Maria’s arms, clutching her maid’s apron as if it were the only safe place. Maria stroked the girl’s hair with her injured hand and whispered softly, “You’re safe now, my love. No one will hurt you anymore.”
Richard knelt down and embraced them both. His voice broke. “Thank you, Maria. You saved what was most important to me. I will never forget that.”
Maria shook her head. “She’s your daughter, sir. I couldn’t just stand there and do nothing.”
Emily sniffed, squeezing them both in her small hand. “Can we stay like this forever?”
Richard kissed her forehead with tears in his eyes. “Forever, my love. I promise.”
In that moment, Richard realized that although his marriage had fallen apart, he had gained something stronger. He had a daughter safe and at his side a woman who had proven her loyalty not with words but with blood.
The maid did the unthinkable, and thanks to her courage, Richard saw the truth about love and family: true love protects, no matter the cost.
