Then suddenly a young man who was standing nearby intervened.
He did something that took all the passengers’ breath away.
The boy took off his coat, went to his mother and gently covered the woman and the child with her.
“It’ll be more comfortable for you,” he said, then turned to the agitated passenger.
“I hope you’ll finally shut up. Your talk of ‘our times’ is unbearable. That era is over. People live differently today.
” “That’s none of your business,” the woman replied sharply.
“You’d better keep quiet or move somewhere else, or you’ll get in trouble.
” “Are you threatening me?” the woman snapped.
“Yes, exactly,” the man confirmed calmly. “Enough. You’re a woman yourself; you should support her, not hinder her.”
There was silence in the carriage.
The old woman snorted contemptuously, but did not dare to object.
He got off at the next stop without a word, as if nothing had happened.
And the mother, covered with a cloak, calmly finished feeding her child.
